our picks!: new music CDs for kids

(that won't make adults want to rip their hair out!)

Special Selections from Perrot's Youth Services Staff

September 2007

Okay, now, admit it --- you’re ready for something besides Raffi or yet another version of “I’m a Little Teapot”, aren’t you?

We get it! Here are a few of our newest kids’ CD acquisitions that are great for family listening (and maybe a little air guitar, too!).

Remember, our kids' CDs are now located in the media room downstairs.

Dan Zanes and Friends: House Party

House Party

Dan Zanes and Friends

Time Magazine says: "The guitarist of '80s indie-rock band the Del Fuegos now makes eclectic folk rock for kids. House Party combines covers of the familiar (Jamaica Farewell) and the obscure (the rollicking Tennessee Wig Walk) with crafty originals, like the R&B-inflected House Party Time. Surprise guests include Deborah Harry (Blondie) and Bob Weir (The Grateful Dead)."

Various Artists: Bright Spaces 2

Bright Spaces 2: Family Music to Benefit Children in Crisis

Various Artists

The Bright Spaces program creates magical children’s playrooms in shelters so that children in crisis can play, grow, and develop even during times of great stress. Bright Spaces 2 is a very special compilation of tracks personally selected by Dan Zanes, including tracks from Jerry Garcia & David Grisman, Woody Guthrie, and Sweet Honey In The Rock. Dan Zanes says of the album: "Let's call this a musical scrapbook. In it you'll find a sea shanty, a West Indian waltz, a few Woody tunes, a Jewish wedding poem set to music, an old time nonsense number, a lyrical rock and roll song, an updated spiritual, a couple of forties pop standards, and many more melodic moments."

High School Musical Soundtrack

High School Musical Soundtrack

Disney has struck platinum with High School Musical, a made-for-cable movie that was mega-popular on the Disney Channel before spawning a mega-popular soundtrack. Echoing Grease, the plot involves two students (played by Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens) who fall for each other while on vacation, only to realize they go to the same high school— though they belong to different cliques. Fortunately they both love singing! The songs stick to your head like strawberry-flavored gum. Bonus tracks include a reprise of "Get'cha Head in the Game" by R&B group B5 and, fittingly, karaoke versions of the hits "Start of Something New" and "Breaking Free.”

Bill Harley: I Wanna Play

I Wanna Play

Bill Harley

Funnyman Harley is at it again! Get ready to shake, rattle, roll, strum, howl and sway with Bill as he serenades kids and families with his characteristic silliness, hilarity, and poignancy on his newest musical recording I Wanna Play. The 12 songs on this album, including the long-awaited and much-loved "Barbie’s Head is Missing," are hilarious, sweet, silly and touching, and have a world music feel. A 2007 Parents' Choice Gold Award Winner, The song "I Wanna Play" won 2nd place in the International Songwriting Competition in the Children's Music Category.

Imagination Movers: Calling All Movers

Calling All Movers

Imagination Movers

With Calling All Movers, the Imagination Movers conjure a warm, safe place populated by healthful snacks, early life milestones (like dealing with being lost, the first day of school, baths, and other scary situations), along with carefree fun and games. It's all that childhood should be-- but parents are also welcome. Sophisticated arrangements, rich production values, memorable melodies, and clever lyrics make this offering particularly appealing to grown-ups as well as kids.

Ben Rudnick and Friends: Grace's Bell

Grace's Bell

Ben Rudnick and Friends

With their trademark mix of crackling energy, adventurous musicianship, and warm humor, Ben Rudnick and Friends extol the virtues of vowels, imagine a world enamored with tubas, and celebrate the spirit of a bicycle bell. Special guests Buddy Cage (New Riders of the Purple Sage), Jeff Bird (Cowboy Junkies) and the Tuba Tune Horn Section add their grace to Grace’s Bell.
