THE LABYRINTH, BY KATE MOSSE

[Fiction] Alice, a young archaeologist, stumbles onto a “find.” She is volunteering on a dig in France, in an area known as the Midi. Quite by accident, a large boulder moves and voila!-- an entrance to a cave is uncovered. Alice’s life is connected to another Alice who lived in the 1200’s and was part of a group of Christians devoted to protecting the Holy Grail. This is an intriguing book, full of a great wealth of historical fact. The interwoven lives add another dimension to this fascinating read.

JANE AUSTEN IN SCARSDALE: OR LOVE, DEATH AND THE SAT's,

BY PAULA MARANTZ COHEN

[Fiction]  Life is tough for a high school guidance counselor these days in Westchester County (and elsewhere). In addition to dealing with college admission policies and questionable practices of the very high achievers and their parents, Anne Ehrlich is pining away for her first love from many years ago. This romantic comedy borrows from Jane Austen’s Persuasion, and is a good “last days of summer at the beach” book.

PLUM WINE, BY ANGELA DAVIS-GARDNER

PLUM WINE, BY ANGELA DAVIS-GARDNER

[Fiction] Barbara Jefferson, who is teaching English in Japan in 1966, receives a bequest from Michiko, her fellow teacher and mentor who has suddenly died.  The beautiful wooden chest contains bottles of plum wine, dated by year and wrapped in paper covered with writing.  Since Barbara cannot read Japanese, she enlists the help of Michiko’s friend, Seiji, a man between the two women in age.  The translations, which reveal Michiko’s experiences during the bombing of Hiroshima, form the rest of the novel, as does the growing love between Barbara and Seiji.  This novel has a grace and beauty that is difficult to describe, yet not to be missed.

CAN'T WAIT TO GET TO HEAVEN, BY FANNIE FLAGG

CAN'T WAIT TO GET TO HEAVEN, BY FANNIE FLAGG

[Fiction] Another winner from the author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café. Elderly Mrs. Elner Shimfissle is up in a tree picking figs, falls off her ladder, and is rushed unconscious to the local hospital. What happens next changes her life, and the lives of many of her friends and neighbors in Elmwood Springs, Missouri.  This story is lighthearted fun with plenty of laughs, but underneath it all are some profound questions and answers about life’s mysteries.
